Apply online

If you want to apply for hourly in-store positions, you will have to use Kroger's hiring website to do so. Read the 'Kroger application process' section below for some tips on filling out your application.

Kiosks

All Kroger stores are equipped with computer kiosks that you can use to submit an application. The application process is identical to the one that you'll find on Kroger's website, but the kiosks are a nice service for people who don't have a computer or a reliable internet connection.

The Kroger Application Process

The Kroger application is one of the longest and most cumbersome applications we've ever seen. Unless you really just need any job, or you have a particularly strong desire to work at Kroger, it's hard to imagine having the patience to get through it. CIA applications are likely less thorough. The entire application process will take you at least 50 minutes to complete, and maybe even more depending on the position you're applying to. We would recommend setting aside at least an hour and a half, just to be safe. You can safe yourself some time if you prepare as much as you can beforehand. You will need your employment history, educational history, a list of previous addresses, a drivers license number, a list of professional contacts, an emergency contact (why?!), and your social security number to get through the application. Yes, it's a lot.You will start out the application process by entering your zip code and searching for a store in your area. Unlike most applications, you don't start out applying for a job -- you start out applying to a store (though you can select an exact position later on).The first section of the application is designed to collect all of your personal information, and it does take quite awhile to enter it all. The second part of the application is an assessment, which we'll go over in detail below.

Assessment

The assessment that Kroger puts you through is long and grueling. It's seventeen pages, with five questions on each page (yes, that's a total of 85 questions). From Kroger's point of view, the assessment helps them determine if you would make a good fit for their company. But from a jobseeker's point of view, it's just a really frustrating process to go through. To give you an idea of what it's like, here are a few sample questions:"People do a lot of annoying things""It is easy for you to feel what others are feeling""It is hard to really care about work when the job is boring"For each question, you will be provided with five potential answers, ranging from 'strongly agree' to 'strongly disagree.' Most of the time it's pretty obvious which answer is the 'correct' answer, but if you find yourself in a position where you aren't quite sure, take a minute to think about why Kroger decided to ask the question. What are they trying to learn about you? Also, as a bit of a tip: You will have the best chances of success if you give strong answers. Overall, it's much better to strongly agree or strongly disagree -- they don't want to hire people with wishy-washy 'neutral' positions on important questions.

Background check

During the application process, you will be required to give Kroger permission to perform a pre-employment background check. In their own words, it is a "criminal background check, a previous employment verification check, and/or an education verification check." So be sure to be honest on your application, or chances are great that they will catch you lying.

Drug test

You must also consent to a pre-employment drug test in order to complete the application.

How long does Kroger keep your application on file?

Kroger keeps your application on file for a year, but it's only active for 60 days. If 60 days go by and you haven't heard back, you'll have to go through the long application process again.

How to Get Updates on Your Kroger Application

Unfortunately, Kroger does not provided automatic application updates at this time. If you want to find out where you stand, your best bet is to call the hiring manager at the store you've applied to.

Who is Kroger Hiring?

Kroger is an equal opportunity employer. They do not factor age, rage, gender, religious beliefs, or disabilities into their hiring decisions.

Jobs available at Kroger

In Kroger stores, there are many different positions available. You can work as a cashier, stock clerk, pharmacy technician, butcher, baker, supervisor, manager, and many more. Search jobsThere are also many positions available at Kroger's corporate headquarters. To keep an eye on those positions as they open up, you can use StartWire or check Kroger's hiring website.

Types of people Kroger wants to hire

First of all, we recommend that you read Kroger's job descriptions very carefully, as they will give you a very good idea of the qualities that they value the most in their employees. But overall, they seem to prefer people who are hardworking, pay attention to detail, work well on a team, will be on time, and have good customer service skills. You should do your best to emphasize those qualities on the application and during the interview.

Age requirements

You must be at least 14 years old to work at Kroger (with a work permit). Of course, the age requirements vary from position to position, though -- you won't be able to work as a butcher until you're 18, for example.
