Metals are generally solid materials that conduct heat and electricity. They are malleable and ductile and also lustrous, hard, strong, heavy and sonorous. Iron, aluminium, copper, gold and silver are five metals.

Metals are materials holding or possessing the characteristics of being shiny, hard, fusible, malleable, ductile, etc. Few examples of metals (materials) are – Gold, Silver, Aluminium, Copper, Iron, etc.

They are gold, silver, platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, and osmium. Of the precious metals that are not gold or silver, platinum is the most traded.

Base metals include: aluminum, copper, nickel, lead, tin, and zinc. These metals are more common and more easily extracted than precious metals, and they are used extensively in various industries due to their practical properties.

Gold is known as the king of metals.

Until the 14th century AD, (Western) humankind only distinguished seven metals, known as the "seven metals of antiquity ": Gold, Silver, Copper, Iron, Tin, Lead and Mercury. Zinc, covered above, was unknowingly used as alloy element in copper (producing brass) but never obtained in its elemental state.

Tungsten, which is Swedish for "heavy stone," is the strongest metal in the world. It was identified as a new element in 1781. It is commonly used to make bullets and missiles, metal evaporation work, manufacturing of paints, creating electron and Television tubes, and making glass to metal seals.

It is categorized as non-metal because it is an allotrope of carbon that is a poor conductor of heat and electricity, non-malleable and non-ductile, non-reactive, and does not produce oxides.

Of the ninety naturally occurring elements, 66 of them are metals, and almost all of the 28 artificially produced elements are metallic (or are expected to be if more than a handful of atoms of some of them could be generated). All tolled, 93 out of 118 elements are metallic.

Hydrogen, Helium, Lithium, Beryllium, Boron, Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Fluorine, and Neon are the first 10 elements of the periodic table. Among them, only Lithium and Beryllium are metals rest are non-metals.

Group 10, numbered by current IUPAC style, is the group of chemical elements in the periodic table that consists of nickel (Ni), palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), and darmstadtium (Ds). All are d-block transition metals.

Lithium, Beryllium, Sodium, Magnesium, Aluminium, Potassium, and Calcium are metals in the first twenty elements. Hydrogen, Helium, Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Fluorine, Neon, Phosphorous, Sulphur, Chlorine, and Argon are the non-metals in the first twenty elements.
