Who is Rocky Balboa?
In the first movie, Rocky is a 30-year-old club boxer from Philadelphia who works as a debt collector for a loan shark. When heavyweight champion Apollo Creed has an opponent drop out of a fight with a broken hand and can’t find a replacement, he decides to give a local underdog an opportunity at the title. In Rocky’s corner are Mickey Goldmill (his manager), Paulie Pennino (his friend) and Adrianna “Adrian” Pennino (his girlfriend and Paulie’s sister), who reluctantly supports his career. From then on, Rocky’s battles take him around the world and change his personal world completely — but not always for the better.
The bouts
Rocky Balboa fought 64 times before the main event in Rocky, going 44-20 with 38 knockouts. Here’s a look at his career from that bout forward, upping his career record to 57-22 entering Rocky Balboa.
I — Loses to Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) by decision in 15 rounds.
II — Defeats Creed (46-1) by KO in the 15th to win title.
III — 10 title defenses against lesser-name opponents.
III — Loses to Clubber Lang (Mr. T) via KO in the second round.
III — Defeats Lang (27-1) via KO in third to regain title.
IV — Defeats Russian killing machine Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) by KO in 15th round of a non-title bout held in Russia.
Other brawls
These two don’t show up on Balboa’s pro record:
III– Fought to a draw with wrestling heavyweight champion Thunderlips (Hulk Hogan) in an exhibition that raised $75,000 for a youth foundation.
V– Won street fight with Tommy “The Machine” Gunn (Tommy Morrison), the 23-0 heavyweight champion.
Don’t ask Rocky
In Rocky V, Balboa told his son that he was nervous before each of his 72 fights — clearly showing that his brain damage led him to forget a few bouts along the way.
Rocky’s paydays
Many of Balboa’s latter fights made him millions, but here are two noteworthy early paydays:
Made $40.55 for beating Spider Rico in the opener of Rocky.
Made $150,000 for fighting Apollo Creed in Rocky, but says he only cleared $37,000 in Rocky II. (The taxes always kill you.)
They said it
Reporter: “Where did you get the name, Italian Stallion?” Rocky: “I invented that about eight years ago when I was eating dinner.” Rocky
“You’re gonna eat lightning, and you’re gonna crap thunder!”
— Mick, Rocky
“You like having a good time?
Then you need a watch.”
— Rocky, at the jewelry store
with Adrian, Rocky II
“Was ya ever punched in the face 500 times a night? It stings after
a while, ya know.”
— Rocky, Rocky II
Rocky: “How’d you get so tough?”
Adrian: “I live with a fighter.” Rocky III
“I must break you.”
