To make the most powerful Pokémon in Pokémon Go, you’ll likely need to use the different types of TMs (Technical Machines) to give your Pokémon the best moves. Our Pokémon Go guide will talk about where to find and how to use Elite TMs, Charged TMs, and Fast TMs.
Fast TMs can teach your Pokémon random new fast moves. Charged TMs can teach your Pokémon a random new charged move. The Elite versions of these TMs allow you to pick which move the Pokémon learns and pick from Legacy moves. Legacy moves come from events, like Community Days or special raids, and you can’t otherwise learn them outside of these events.
You can get regular Fast and Charged TMs from raids or as rewards for Special Research Tasks, like the set of quests that reward you with Jirachi. Events that have Timed Research Tasks may also give TMs as a reward.
Elite TMs can also be rewarded from event Timed Research, but the main way to get them is to buy them in bundles. Community Day bundles in the shop, which need to be purchased with coins, often have Elite TMs. This makes Elite TMs a rarity, especially among free-to-play players.
To use a TM, tap on the Pokémon you want to use it on, open the menu, and select “Items.” Then tap on the TM you’d like to use. Normal TMs ask if you’re sure that you want to replace the Pokémon’s current move with a random one. Elite TMs give you a list of moves to pick from.
The best moves to use Elite TMs on
Because Elite TMs are so rare, don’t squander them by teaching Pokémon moves that they can learn from normal TMs. Save them specifically for raid Legacy moves.
For example, any Mewtwo caught during raids at one point came with the move Shadow Ball, but this move is not obtainable using normal TMs. Shadow Ball is one of the two best move choices on Mewtwo, meaning it’s definitely worth using an Elite Charged TM for. Getting the best move on one of the strongest Pokémon in the game is a good way to use an Elite TM.
Community Day moves like Blast Burn or Hydro Cannon could also be a good use of Elite TM. However, based on past years, there tends to be a Community Weekend in December that allows you to learn older Community Day moves when you evolve relevant Pokémon during the event. Depending on how far off that is and how urgent it is for you to get that move, it might be worth saving the Elite TM for something else.
Ultimately, go with your gut. If you really want that Frenzy Plant Venusaur and you want it now, use your Elite Charged TM on it. You’ll get another Elite TM down the line from an event, and if you end up never using it, that’s a much bigger waste.
Elite Fast TMs and Elite Charged TMs allow you to choose a Fast or Charged Attack you'd like to teach to a Pokémon. Elite TMs also allow Pokémon to learn attacks previously available only during events such as Community Days or Raid Days.
Charged TM. Teaches the Pokémon a new Charged Attack.
Elite Fast TM. Allows you to choose a Fast Attack to teach to a Pokémon, including Fast Attacks that were previously only available during events like Community Days or Raid Days.
There are two types of Elite TMs: Elite Fast TM – This Technical Machine lets you choose a Fast Attack to teach to a Pokémon. Elite Charge TM – This Technical Machine lets you choose a Charged Attack to teach to a Pokémon.
Elite Fast TMs and Elite Charged TMs are rare items that are only available during limited times. They may be available for purchase in the Shop during special events like Community Days or as part of end-of-season rewards in GO Battle League if you reach a high rank.
Most legacy and event-exclusive moves, such as Community Day moves, can also be learned this way. However, Elite Charged TMs cannot teach Frustration or Return, even if the Pokémon is Shadow or Purified. It cannot replace Frustration, except during specific events that allow this such as a Team GO Rocket takeover.
Most Pokémon can learn a second Charged Attack, which is helpful in a few ways for Trainer Battles. A second Charged Attack could provide a Pokémon a good way of dealing with its weaker matchups, for example.
Fast Attacks are the repeated attacks that players perform when they tap on the screen during a battle; the Charged Attacks can only be used once they're powered up and will appear as a button on the lower part of the screen.
Since that Mon now has two moves, using the charge TM will bring up a prompt asking you which of the two moves you want to change. This is the point where I advise that you click with care. As you can see in the screenshot, the buttons for the two moves you can change after using a charge TM are fairly close together.
Hidden Power is a fast attack which can be any type except Normal and Fairy. It is not dependent on the Pokémon's type. The move's type cannot be changed to another type by using Fast TM or Elite Fast TM. Multiple uses of Fast TM on a Pokemon will cause it to learn the same-type Hidden Power again.
Considering the fact that Roar of Time and Spacial Rend can't currently be obtained via TM/Elite TM, knowing the odds of getting the move for the dragon who's version can definitely help. But, regardless, save all of your Origin Formes with their Signature Moves, as they can be used for trades later!
During special events, evolving Metang into Metagross will automatically teach it Meteor Mash. If you've missed an event, you might also use an Elite Charged TM to teach an existing Metagross the coveted move, though these TMs are rare and valuable.
To get Precipice Blades, you'll need a specific Pokemon: Groudon. Groudon can learn Precipice Blades, but there's a catch. It can only learn this move during special events or through the use of an Elite TM (Technical Machine).
Quick Charge increases the priority of the first move used by the bearer by 4, during that turn only. Quick Guard does not protect the user from Quick Charge-boosted moves since Quick Charge's priority is greater than Quick Guard's.
Getting a Charged TM in Pokémon GO is pretty straightforward. You earn them by competing in battles, specifically in the Battle League, raid battles, or by completing certain in-game research tasks. Keep those Poké Balls ready!
