A Technical Machine, or TM for short, is an item that is used to teach a Pokémon a move. A Hidden Machine, or HM for short, is also an item that is used to teach a Pokémon a move. TMs and HMs can be found in a variety of places, such as lying on the ground or bought at department stores.
What is the difference between TMs and HMs? ›
The differences between TMs and HMs are minimal. TMs are mainly used for battle, and can easily be forgotten to make room for another move. HMs are mainly used for exploration in the Pokemon world, such as cutting down small trees and surfing across oceans.
How do you use HM and TM? ›
Use the TMs and HMs by accessing them in your inventory. You can only teach certain HMs and TMs to Pokemon based on Type. HMs have the added benefit of giving you special mobility in the field. Teach these to Pokemon in your party and then access them in the pause menu to use them.
How many times can you use TMs? ›
In Generations I to IV, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl and Generation IX, TMs can only be used once, after which they disappear from the Bag. From Generation V to Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, players get to use them more than once, just like an HM.

Hidden Machines, or HMs, are items that allow a Pokémon to learn a certain move. These items are usually necessary to progress, and as such, can be used multiple times on multiple Pokémon, unlike Technical Machines, or TMs. You do NOT need to teach HMs in your inventory to a pokemon in order to use them.
Why can't HM moves be forgotten? ›
HM moves can't be deleted just anywhere, to prevent players from accidentally stranding themselves somewhere. There's a move deleter in Dendemille Town that can delete HM moves.

A lot of TMs are one-time only, and you can't clone them without a hacking device. You can trade for one, if you so desire. Say I want to teach two pokemon the same move, but I have a TM that can only be found once in the game.
